I really do remember my first roll.  That was over 60 years ago and it was not very good. But I did learn a lot and hope to share some thoughts to help flyers succeed on some basic maneuvers. It’s very rewarding discovering and improving the pure magic of flying.

The Pilot

Let’s assume you can take off and land comfortably, place your aircraft where you want in heading and altitude, not perfectly. I would say the pilot is ready.

The Plane

Nothing really special needed here. A basic high wing trainer can work really well. A plane you are comfortable with and you’re good to go.

The Day

Yes, it does make a difference. Pick a decent day. Not too much wind, especially a crosswind.

Getting Ready

Pondering on what you’re about to do is one of the most important things you can do to prepare. In your mind practice your first Roll over and over. Even better if you have a simulator. But certainly not required.

Here we go!

The easiest way to begin is a little high and not too far away.  Enter with plenty of speed.  Gently pull the nose up to about 20 degrees then full aileron and don’t stop until you are right side up do not panic.  Now that the roll is complete, reset yourself and repeat. Hint, try to repeat at the same altitude and position to become comfortable.  It wont be perfect as these rolls are arcing but we will fix that next

Part 2, rolling on a wire

To flatten the arc we are going to learn to add a LITTLE down elevator while inverted. Timing is everything. And this takes time to develop. If the elevator is applied too early, you will lose heading.  If too late you will lose heading. If there is too much elevator it will balloon. If not enough you will lose altitude. Sounds complicated but not really if you use small steps to understand what’s going on.  

Hints:

1. Almost always the plane has too much throw. If not sure, ask for help!  I am always eager, please ask! 
2. Expo is usually not used or correct. see # 1 and ask!
3. Almost any model can be made to acro quite well. Set up is so important. Ask I can help making it a LOT easier!

In Closing

Practicing will add to your comfort level. As you become comfortable you can inch your way lower. Bit by bit and you will be doing airshow rolls!
